New pswp essay on autonomous driving: Germany as pacesetter

March 2022

Germany is speeding ahead. pswp attorneys Dr. Benedikt Wolfers, M.A. and Nils Schlenkhoff shed light on Germany’s leading role in the regulation of autonomous driving in their latest essay “Autonomes Fahren wird regulatorisch Realität: Deutschland als Tempomacher” (Autonomous driving becomes regulatory reality: Germany as a pacesetter), published in the journal Recht Automobil Wirtschaft (RAW) (1-92) pp. 24 ff. In their article, Wolfers and Schlenkhoff discuss the dynamic legal framework for autonomous driving, particularly in light of the enactment of Germany’s – the world’s first – law on autonomous driving. They show that Germany has filled the regulatory gap that previously existed at the international and European level, thus paving the way for autonomous driving in regulatory terms. They analyse whether the law will act as a technical innovation driver and legal model for international legal harmonization.
